Bucs Draft Catcher Sanchez with 4th Pick

" To those long-worn Pirates followers who are critical about the organization's fiscally sensitive draft philosophy in the past decade and a half, to those fans who are skeptical over this administration's spread-the-wealth strategy for a less starry but deeper draft than the one that netted $6 million man Pedro Alvarez a year ago, Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez wants to throw this at you:

He thrives on exceeding small expectations; he strives to be an over-performing underdog.
"

Okay, so this pick has once again inflamed a lot of the same debate circles that were less than a week ago still livid from the McClouth trade, and now a lot of Buccos fans perceive this as a Moskos-like situation. While signability was undoubtedly a driving factor in this decision, this is certainly not a player that might not pan out to the major leagues. Which is nice, because often in years past the Buccos have certainly dealt with enough of those types of players.

The thing that is interesting about this pick, however, is that while most perceive Sanchez as first-round talent, and someone that would be picked at the latest within the first ten picks of the second, there were other players that also had signability as a factor still available in the first round that were still projected higher than Sanchez.

Okay, so I've heard that drafting pitching talent is really hit-or-miss, whereas positional and power drafting is a little less risky, but there were still signable position/bat players available at this time... The only thing left to explain is why the Pirates were so high on this guy, because he obviously wouldn't have been available at the 49th pick when it came back around to the Bucs.
