Pens' contracts and a look ahead

" The following is a listing of each Penguins player and his contract status, along with a look at his future with the team."

Well, here is a place that lists the current status of Pens contracts... shows who is signed through next year, and who will/can be free agents. Some of the guys were not all that active this season (actually playing) and some are not high end salaries.
My personal opinion, while wishing we could keep 'em all, these are my picks for MUST KEEPS:

Ryan Malone, Jarkko Ruutu, Adam Hall, Brooks Orpik, Marc-Andre Fleury.

It would not break my heart if these and others were kept as well. Be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah, I definitely see Malkin getting an extension worth his time, and I'm not so sure the Pens will be able to match what Malone will be offered. It's going to hurt to see him go (unless he takes a hometown discount). To be honest, if he's offered a huge contract from say Edmonton (who seems to have hurt themselves with trade talks with the Vanek situation and must build through free agency) I wouldn't be offended if he takes it. He's young, has a family, wouldnt hurt to get a good contract. If he gets hurt and can't play, what's he going to do?

At times, it's somewhat scary to think what this team will lose in free agency, but then again... Mr. Shero has made some very smart moves and exciting ones as well, so I look forward to July 1st.

A few updates on the contracts situation:

-The Pens have entered arbitration with Fleury. This gives them more time to kind of take care of others without having to go down the wire with Fleury before having to pay an inflated contract.

-Sources from Columbus believe that Malone is getting low-balled by the Pens and that if Malkin and Hossa are re-signed it pretty much puts Malone out the door July 1st. Source on this one:

Interesting news no doubt, but we'll have to see where it leaves us... I dont know what I think of the Hossa-Malone trade-off. I love Hossa's all-around game and his sheer offensive abilities, but it leaves the question of if a role player to "replace" Malone's role is to be found at the price we're looking for. Can that kind of gritty power forward be found?

According to Greg Wyshynski from Yahoo! Sports, the Penguins have offered Hossa a 7-year, $50 million offer to stay in Pittsburgh ($7.14m/year). Wow.

As Wyshynski notes, where does this leave Malkin and Staal?
