Ranger's Whining, Focus on Officiating Led to Loss

" Had the Rangers focused on their own defense, their poor support of Henrik Lundqvist in goal, and their inability to score on countless powerplays, perhaps the series wouldn't have ended 4-1 in favor of the Penguins.

SCST's MattyGabe weighs in with his own opinion.
"

I've heard quite a bit of this whining. I think their coach Tom Renney made a few comments. Jagr their captain made a few comments, both on and off the ice. Their focus shifted to the refs, and their blame followed.

A lot of the New York media thrived over these accusations. "The officiating in the second period was atrocious..." writes Greg Wyshynski from Yahoo. I haven't heard a single notion that the Rangers' defense began to slack off in the second which led to Hossa and Malkin goals, or that Lundqvist was simply smoked by the Pens' snipers. No, instead they blamed the officiating.

New York is a huge media outlet. They haven't had a cup since 1994 (not like we know what its like to wait that long...or longer), so any thing like this that they can get their hands on to not blame their own team they'll use.

I'll end on a small side note for Rangers fans: Jagr's most likely packing his bags for Russia. Have no love lost for the man. He's a talented player, but you don't want his sort of "leadership" in your locker room - the sort of leadership that yields the most dollar signs in his favor. Take a look at a few of the captains around the league. Crosby, though young, has already surpassed Jagr as a better leader. Listen to his interviews after a game the Pens lose. Are the officials mentioned once? No. What about his team's effort, how hard they skate? It's the first thing he mentions.

Lord Stanley's playoffs are decided with best-of-seven series for a reason. The best team advances and the worse team goes home. Sorry, New York, it was your turn to leave.
